Scapegoating Abuse – When Your Family Made You the Problem
Family relationships are supposed to provide safety, belonging, support and a sense of identity. But in some families, one person is repeatedly blamed, shamed, criticized, excluded or treated as the source of family problems.
You may have been called difficult, selfish, overly sensitive, dramatic, rebellious or ungrateful. You may have been blamed for problems you did not cause, gossiped about within the family, bullied or ostracized by several family members acting together.
Perhaps you grew up with a narcissistic or emotionally abusive parent, or found yourself repeatedly scapegoated by siblings, partners or other people close to you.
When this happens over time, it can profoundly affect how you see yourself and how you relate to other people.
You may know intellectually that the treatment you received was unfair, yet still struggle with self doubt, guilt, shame, anxiety, grief, low self worth, difficult relationships or a painful uncertainty about who you really are.
Healing begins with understanding how you were hurt, and recognizing that the negative role your family gave you does not define who you are.
What Is Family Scapegoating?
Family scapegoating occurs when blame, shame and responsibility for problems are repeatedly directed toward one person within a family system. The designated scapegoat may not be the source of or directly connected to any of the family’s central problems.
The scapegoated family member may be singled out for criticism, blamed when things go wrong, excluded from family relationships, subjected to gossip or treated as though they are fundamentally defective or responsible for the family’s difficulties.
In families affected by narcissistic or other emotionally abusive dynamics, scapegoating can help protect the family system from examining the behavior of the people who hold — and misuse — the most power.
The scapegoat becomes targeted as the problem, while other people’s harmful behavior is minimized, denied, excused or projected onto them.
This can be especially confusing when family members insist that the scapegoat is the one causing the difficulties.
Over time, repeated blame and invalidation can become internalized by the targeted scapegoat. You may start to question your own perceptions and accept negative beliefs about yourself that originated in the family. This is especially true when abuse starts in early childhood.
But I need you to know that being scapegoated does not mean that you are the problem!
The Effects of Family Scapegoating
The effects of long term scapegoating can extend well beyond the family home.
You may experience:
- Low self worth, shame or a persistent feeling that something is wrong with you
- Chronic self doubt and difficulty trusting your perceptions or decisions
- Anxiety, hypervigilance or feeling emotionally unsafe
- Feeling chronically alone, misunderstood or neglected
- Complicated or unresolved grief over the family relationships you needed but did not have
- Confusion about your identity, needs, values or direction in life
- Difficulty establishing or maintaining healthy boundaries
- Problems with trust, intimacy or communication in adult relationships
- A tendency to over explain, over function, people please or take excessive responsibility, often due to chronic insecurity
- Difficulty recognizing when a relationship is unhealthy because familiar patterns can feel normal
Some people spend years trying to find a way to fit back into the family, hoping that if they can explain themselves clearly enough, change enough or become good enough, they will finally be accepted and loved.
Unfortunately, healing often requires letting go of the belief that your recovery depends on changing other people, especially people who have a tendency to avoid taking responsibility for their actions and / or see themselves as victims.
Family Scapegoating, Narcissistic Abuse and Trauma
Narcissistic abuse and family scapegoating frequently overlap, although they are not exactly the same thing.
A narcissistic or highly self centered family member may use blame, projection, criticism, manipulation, triangulation or other forms of emotional abuse to protect their own self image and maintain control. Narcissistic spectrum personalities tend to lack empathy, and have an expectation that others serve their interests.
Within the larger family system, one person may become the convenient target for these dynamics.
Repeated exposure to emotional abuse, rejection, unpredictability and invalidation can create lasting psychological effects. Your nervous system may remain on alert long after you are physically removed from the family environment.
This is one reason that simply understanding what happened may not be enough.
You can understand that you were treated poorly by your family and still need time and support to recover from the harm.
The 5 R Model of Family Scapegoat Recovery
Recovery is not simply about understanding that your family was dysfunctional.
It is about overcoming the ways those experiences continue to affect your sense of self, your emotional wellbeing and your relationships.
My approach to recovery from scapegoat abuse can be understood through five stages:
- Recognize → 2. Reality Test → 3. Reclaim → 4. Rebuild → 5. Reorient
These stages are connected, but recovery is not necessarily linear. You may move back and forth between them as you heal and encounter new situations that bring old patterns to the surface.
You do not have to complete one stage perfectly before moving into another. In fact, you may return to earlier stages with greater understanding as your recovery progresses.
1. Recognize
Understand What Went Wrong – How You Were Harmed
Healing begins with recognition that you have been injured by scapegoat abuse.
You begin to identify the scapegoating patterns, narcissistic or emotionally harmful dynamics, and family roles that shaped your experience.
You may start asking different questions that challenge the scapegoat narrative you were held to:
Was I really the problem?
Why was I treated differently from other family members?
Why did I keep trying to earn acceptance?
Why do I still feel guilty when I set boundaries?
Understanding the pattern can help you make sense of experiences that may have seemed confusing or impossible to explain.
Recognition of what went wrong can bring relief, grief, anger or confusion. You may begin to see that family dynamics you once considered normal were actually deeply hurtful.
2. Reality Test
Separate Your Family Story From the Truth
When a person has been blamed and invalidated repeatedly, the family’s version of them can become an internal voice.
You may have absorbed beliefs such as:
I’m selfish
I’m too sensitive
I’m difficult
I’m responsible for everyone else’s feelings
I have to try harder to be accepted
Recovery involves learning to examine these beliefs rather than automatically accepting them as facts.
Reality testing means developing a more accurate understanding of yourself, your responsibilities and what actually happened in your relationships.
It also means recognizing that you can have human flaws, make mistakes and still not be responsible for or deserving of being mistreated.
As you begin questioning deeply internalized beliefs, you may initially feel confused, disloyal or uncertain. Over time, reality testing can help you develop greater confidence in your own perceptions and judgment.
3. Reclaim
Restore Your True Sense of Self
As you separate your identity from the scapegoat role, you can begin to reclaim parts of yourself that became overshadowed by years of criticism, false shame and being in survival mode.
This can involve rebuilding:
- Self worth
- Confidence
- Self trust
- Identity
- Personal values
- Needs and preferences
- A sense of competence and possibility
Many adult scapegoats eventually find themselves asking:
Who am I if I am no longer trying to prove myself to my family?
That question can feel unsettling at first, but it can also become the beginning of genuine freedom.
You may begin rediscovering interests, strengths, values and needs that were ignored, criticized, pushed aside or punished. Reclaiming yourself does not mean becoming a perfect version of yourself. It means developing a more authentic and compassionate understanding of who you are.
4. Rebuild
Create a Better Life Aligned with Your Legitimate Needs and Values
Healing also involves changing the patterns that continue to affect your life.
You may need to learn how to:
- Establish and maintain healthier boundaries, based on respect and dignity
- Decide how much contact with family is appropriate for you
- Stop over explaining or defending yourself
- Respond differently to criticism and manipulation
- Recognize unhealthy relationship patterns
- Develop greater trust and intimacy in safe relationships
- Make decisions based on your own needs and values rather than fear of disapproval
The goal is not to create perfect relationships. It is to create relationships in which you can be yourself without continually sacrificing your dignity, safety or wellbeing.
As you rebuild, you may discover that some relationships need to change. You may need to become more selective about who you allow to get close to you, learn to tolerate other people’s disappointment when you don’t do what they expect of you, particularly when doing so doesn’t serve your well being, or end relationships that repeatedly undermine your wellbeing.
Establishing a boundary can bring guilt. Receiving healthy treatment from others can initially feel unfamiliar. These experiences do not necessarily mean that you are doing something wrong; they can be part of learning a healthier way of relating.
5. Reorient – Find Freedom
Turn Toward the Life You Want and Deserve
Eventually, recovery becomes less about your family and more about your life.
You begin to orient yourself around your own values, goals, needs and relationships rather than around the family’s negative judgment of you. You set limits around abusive behavior from others because you are prioritizing your psychological well being.
You may still feel sadness about what you lost.
You may still have difficult feelings about your family.
Freedom does not necessarily mean forgetting the past, forgiving people who have not taken responsibility for their harmful actions, or maintaining relationships that are harmful.
It means that the past no longer has to determine who you are or how you live.
You may find that healing from scapegoat abuse increasingly involves asking different questions:
What do I want and need?
What matters to me?
What kind of relationships do I want?
What kind of life do I want to create?
You were assigned a false and punitive role designed to keep you in a one down position. You do not have to live trapped in this role forever.
Recovery Is Not a Straight Line
You may recognize something harmful about your family dynamics and then discover that an old negative belief about yourself is still deeply entrenched in your mind.
You may reclaim your sense of self and then find that a family interaction brings the old scapegoat role rushing back.
You may establish a boundary and experience guilt. You may create healthier relationships and discover how unfamiliar healthy treatment can initially feel.
None of this means you are failing. Recovery often involves revisiting earlier stages with greater understanding and self compassion.
The goal is not to move through the 5 Rs perfectly. The goal is to keep moving toward greater truth, self trust and compassion, healthy relationships and freedom.
Healing From the Losses of Scapegoating
One of the most painful aspects of family scapegoating is that healing often involves grieving what you did not receive — but needed — from your family.
You may be grieving:
- The childhood you deserved
- The protection and acceptance you needed
- The family relationships you hoped you could have
- Years spent trying to gain approval and a sense of belonging
- A sense of identity that was undermined by the family system
- The loss of place and attachment to family we all need
This grief can be complicated because the people you are grieving may still be alive.
You may still hope that they will eventually understand, apologize, change or accept you.
Sometimes that happens. Often, it does not.
Part of healing is developing realistic expectations while making room for the grief that comes with accepting what you cannot change.
What About Family Contact?
There is no single right answer about whether to remain in contact with family members who have scapegoated or abused you.
Some people choose to maintain limited or carefully structured contact.
Some choose low contact.
Some eventually decide that no contact is necessary for their wellbeing.
The important question is not: “What will make my family happy?”
It is: “What relationship, if any, allows me to live with greater emotional safety, dignity and self respect?”
Healthy boundaries are not punishment.
They are a way of taking responsibility for your own wellbeing, and being a healthy role model, even if your family of origin can’t appreciate it
You Can Heal From Family Scapegoating
You do not have to spend the rest of your life trying to convince your family that you are not the person they said you were.
You can learn to recognize the hurtful, controlling and coercive patterns.
You can challenge false shame and negative beliefs.
You can rebuild your self worth and identity.
You can develop healthier boundaries and relationships.
And you can create a life that is no longer organized around the false and damaging role your family assigned to you.
