Cancel Culture Scapegoat Abuse Recovery Therapy & Coaching
Recover From Public Shaming, Doxing, Harassment and Scapegoating
Being publicly blamed, shamed, rejected or targeted can have lasting emotional, relational and practical consequences.
Cancel culture can involve public accusations, social or professional consequences, online harassment, doxing (revealing an individual’s personal information online), exclusion or the continued circulation of information about you online. When you know you have been scapegoated, being cancelled can be especially damaging because you may be left dealing with the consequences of a story about you that does not reflect who you are.
You may know you were scapegoated and still struggle with:
- Shame, self doubt or loss of confidence
- Anxiety, hypervigilance or fear of being targeted again
- Grief over lost relationships, opportunities or communities
- Difficulty trusting yourself or other people
- Social isolation and withdrawal
- Damage to your sense of identity
- Difficulty knowing how to move forward
If you have previously experienced family scapegoating, emotional abuse, rejection or chronic invalidation, being cancelled can also reopen earlier wounds.
When You Know You Were Targeted
You may understand why you were targeted and still find yourself replaying the experience, defending yourself, questioning relationships or wondering how to rebuild your life after being cancelled.
You may be asking:
How do I recover from being cancelled?
How do I stop the experience of being cancelled from affecting my confidence, relationships and everyday life?
How do I move forward when I never received the understanding or accountability I needed?
Being cancelled can leave you carrying shame that does not belong to you, questioning your identity and struggling to trust other people.
You can know that being cancelled was not your fault and still need support to recover from its effects.
The 5 R Model of Scapegoat Recovery
My 5 R Model provides a framework for understanding and recovering from scapegoating and its lasting effects, including the experience of being cancelled.
- Recognize – Understand What Went Wrong – How You Were Harmed
Identify the social dynamics that contributed to what happened and understand their impact.
- Reality Test – Separate Your Story From the Truth
Separate the story imposed on you from who you actually are, what you know to be true and what happened.
- Reclaim – Restore Your True Sense of Self
Release shame and self definitions that were imposed on you and reconnect with your identity, values and legitimate needs.
- Rebuild – Create a Better Life – Aligned With Your Legitimate Needs and Values
Strengthen boundaries, relationships, confidence and practical supports as you create a life that works for you.
- Reorient – Turn Toward the Life You Want and Deserve
Stop organizing your life around being cancelled and begin directing your energy toward the future you want.
What Recovery Can and Cannot Change
Recovery does not require that people who harmed or doubted you change their minds. Some information about being cancelled may remain online, some relationships may not be restored and some consequences may continue.
But you can learn to process the experience of being cancelled, protect your boundaries, rebuild your identity and create meaningful relationships and experiences beyond it.
The goal is to reclaim yourself, rebuild your life and turn toward the life you want and deserve.
